HIV/AIDS in Canada

  • As of 2008 the estimated number of people living with HIV/AIDS in Canada in 2008 was 65,000. 26% of these individuals were undiagnosed, which means they could unknowingly transmit HIV.
  • Number of AIDS cases reported since 1979 is 21,300.
  • 2,300 - 4,500 - New cases of HIV reported each year.

HIV/AIDS in BC

  • New HIV positive tests in 2009 was 338.
  • Total Reactive (positive) HIV tests (1985 until Dec 31, 2008): 13,351
  • In 2009, there were 38 positive tests on Vancouver Island.

HIV/AIDS Worldwide

  • According to UNAIDS’ 2011 World AIDS Day Report, at the end of 2010, an estimated 34 million people [31.6 million–35.2 million] were living with HIV worldwide – up 17% from 2001. This reflects the continued large number of new HIV infections and a significant expansion of access to antiretroviral therapy, which has helped reduce AIDS-related deaths, especially in more recent years.

Hepatitis C in Canada

  • In Canada, an estimated 242,500 individuals are infected with hepatitis C and, because there are often no symptoms, approximately 21% of those individuals don't know they are infected and remain undiagnosed.
  • Many people newly infected with hepatitis C have no symptoms and are unaware of their infection, but they are still infectious.
  • In 2007 nearly 8000 individuals were newly infected with HCV in Canada.

Hepatitis C in BC

  • In 2009, a total of 2,444 cases were reported for a rate of 54.9 per 100,000 population. Although declining, this rate remains considerably above the Canadian rate; however, diagnosis of hepatitis C depends on availability and accessibility of testing.

Hepatitis C on Vancouver Island

  • In 2009, there were 177 new cases in the South Island, 200 in the Central Island, and 92 in the North Island. These represent 48.1 per 100,000 for the South Island, 76.2 per 100,000 for the Central Island, and 92 per 100,000 for the North Island.
