JOB SUMMARY
Under the direct supervision of the Manager of Health Promotion and Community Development, or designate, the SOS/Harm Reduction and Education Worker will provide effective, comprehensive and accessible harm reduction, health promotion, and education services in all aspects of the SOS Mobile Needle Exchange and Education Programs.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
For casual coverage of Street Outreach Services Mobile Exchange program:
1.Provide needle exchange services, distribute condoms, lubricant, alcohol swabs and other harm reduction supplies, as well as harm reduction/health promotion information.
2.Provides clients assessment, crisis intervention or short-term solution focused counselling, referral and advocacy as necessary.
3.With community partners (ie. 911, police, ambulance, MHA, etc.), responds to and manages any health care crisis and crisis situation encountered during an outreach situation (ie. overdoses, suicidal ideation, aggressive behavior, etc.).
4.Collaborates with community partners to provide continuity of client care.
5.Performs basic administrative duties, including fielding phone calls, managing office email, unpacking and stocking supply areas, recording outreach activities in SOS activities and lone working logs, sharing information and discussing client issues with coworker(s).
6.Provides safe recovery of used syringes when appropriate.
7.Operates the drop in space at the Port Hardy office within regular business hours.
8.Debriefs with program supervisor or designate re: outreach activities.
9.Performs other duties as assigned.
For casual coverage of Education program:
1.Books, plans and facilitates presentations and workshops providing HIV/AIDS and Hep C prevention education and information, harm reduction and sexual decision making to school and community based audiences. As well, negotiates with host agencies or groups regarding honoraria where appropriate.
2.Creates and staffs educational displays for community events and public forums.
3.Orders and/or creates, collates and distributes educational materials, and safer sex packs, in schools and community based organizations in the North-Island region.
4.Responds to info-line enquiries during office hours, by telephone or in person, and to provide community referrals as necessary.
5.Order education materials for distribution to the public.
6.Liaises with community-based organizations, regarding issues related to HIV/AIDS and sexual health.
7.Assists in the planning and implementation of occasional local education outreach events as directed.
8.Participates in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the department programs as directed.
9.Continues to foster professional development and understanding of the risks associated with HIV and HCV, associated topics and skills in delivering effective programming.
10. Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
University degree in health or social services, or equivalent combination of education and experience, related to HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C, sexual health and harm reduction.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Leadership experience
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong public speaking, group facilitation, interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal)
- Basic computer skills, including databases and word-processing.
- Ability to work with a diverse selection of marginalized communities, including First Nations and Aboriginal peoples, youth, people who use drugs by injection, GLBTQQAI individuals, and other high-risk populations.
- Demonstrated skills, experience and knowledge in the areas of mental health concerns, addictions, harm reduction/health promotion practices, safer using practices, safer sex and healthy sexuality, homophobia/heterosexism/transphobia, HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C and poverty issues.
- Ability to work under pressure and in crisis situations
