fall person?
Hey all - this is the first time I've posted anything here, but I'm wondering about whether Captain may end up a "fall person" for an AVI hiring decision. While I think Captain is probably highly skilled, smart and able to do great things, hiring a person who hasn't lived the experience of a gay boy/man (ie boy's locker room jibes, chased by guys, beaten and called names that are specifically aimed at gay boys) Captain isn't the right choice for the position. Anymore than hiring a man to coordinate the women's program would be the right decision - even if it were a man who understood women's issues and studied women's issues. At some point the plumbing really does have something to do with it, because we're raised differently due to our plumbing. I wish Captain well, but I fear that Captain will be the scapegoat if things go wrong.
Just my thoughts. I can't believe that AVI couldn't find even one qualified male person who has lived the experience their whole life...

fall person?
Thank you for bringing forward your concerns and welcome to the website. I would welcome the opportunity to meet with you in person, on the phone or via email (what ever works best for you), to share with you my experiences growing up, coming out as both queer and transgendered and what it has been like living as a man for the last 5+ years. I know not all experiences of homophobia, heterosexism and transphobia are transferable but I bet we could find some common ground. Perhaps we could have a coffee. I would love some clarity about what “if things go wrong” means. Right now things are going swimmingly. We are all geared up for the Private Parts Forum this weekend, the Men’s Discussion Group is up and running and being well attended, outreach is happening in the queer bars in Victoria and Nanaimo, at high schools and with queer youth, and men are coming in for 1 to 1 support.
Again, I would love to chat further with you about the points you have raised and find out what directions you would like to see the program take. I can be reached at 384-2366 or at captain.snowdon@avi.org.
Queerly,

Fall Person?
Hi Elf61,
Thanks you for your comments regarding the hiring of the Gay
Men's Community Development Coordinator. We advertised this position widely and received a number of applications from some committed and skilled individuals. We conducted a number of interviews and the man that had the best qualifications and skills for the job was Captain Snowdon. AVI stands by the decision to hire Captain and feel that he is already an incredible asset to the team.
If you have further questions feel free to contact me directly at 384-2366 or Katrina.jensen@avi.org.
Thanks,
Katrina Jensen
